SKY

“I’m so sorry. I made you like me.” ~ General Scarlet, Skineater.

A figure emerged, and she recognized it immediately. Few people were that tall and walked like they had a rod in their spine. Most people nowadays hunched their shoulders, whether it was from depression over how terrible their life was or needing to duck for cover at a moment’s notice.

Sky uncocked the gun again and slipped it into a loop on the back of her pants that hadn’t been used in years.

“What happened?” Lee rushed to Ryan. “Why’d you let them set fire to the barn?”

“I didn’t. They said they’d cover the top so I could come down here. I was worried about the both of you.”

Sky turned and glared at the slope. She knew they’d been up to something. There was a slight movement, but nothing that gave away what the old coot was planning. Were they being used as bait? She scanned the forest for traps. No. If their story was to be believed, it seemed more likely that Jeb had gotten impatient and written them off and decided to rescue his people himself.

Lee tapped his finger on his rapier. “What do we do?”

“Leave.”

His finger halted. “But they’re up against the horsemen. I don’t think they realize who’s in there or they wouldn’t have set that fire.”

Ryan’s brows dipped. “The who?”

Lee pointed to the barn. “The three most famous Skineater generals.”

Understanding dawned in Ryan’s eyes. Sky glanced at Lee and saw determination reflected in his eyes. He’d better not be thinking about joining the fight. Sky was about to warn them when the heat swirling in her chest intensified.

She faced the door. “They’re coming out.”

People ran out of the building in pairs, holding sheets of tin roofing over their heads as a shield.

Battle cries erupted, and the Parson men charged out from the forest around the path. Sky huffed. They’d just blown their advantage with that ridiculous charge.

“I’m not leaving. I gave Jeb my word I would help,” said Ryan.

Sky swung around, scowling. “Never make promises to anyone, let alone strangers.”

Ryan clenched his jaw.

“Can’t you stop this?” asked Lee.

Sky sighed. “It will get messy.”

“You two, stay here.” Ryan pulled out his axe.

“Don’t you dare go out there.”

Ryan stared. “I don’t go back on my word.” He directed a nod at Lee and slipped through the trees faster than Sky could reply.

“Dammit.”

Lee’s mouth hung open. “How’d he move that fast?” He shook his head, then drew his rapier, darting after Ryan.

“Lee,” Sky hissed, but he didn’t stop.

Lee ran straight into the fray, rapier swinging. Steel clashed, and he crossed blades with the worst opponent imaginable. Hades.

“Fuck.” Without a second thought, she ran.

Lee was a good fighter, but he didn’t have the experience and killer instinct that Hades did. Hades would finish him if she didn’t intervene.

Hades kicked Lee in the gut. He stumbled back, curling over in pain. Hades raised his katana, for a fatal strike.

Sky leaped over Lee into Hades’s chest. She landed on top of Hades, and he flipped her off.
