CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Beechwood Priory, 17th March 1987

I was scared of Lucas by the time we finally took him home from the hospital as a baby. I was scared of my baby. He cried relentlessly for three months. Reflux, they said, or was it colic? I can still see his knotted, cherry-red face and crinkled limbs. That shrill howl reverberated through me, shattering my nerves. I fed him until my nipples bled and then paced up and down the room for hours at a time. He would finally fall asleep, suckered to my breast or curled on my chest like a little frog, and I would hold my breath waiting for it to start up again. Richard was never there. He had a week off work when Lucas was first born, but we were still in hospital then, with nurses to help change the nappies and rock him to sleep. He charmed them all, of course. I found him once in the nursery with a group of five ladies hanging on his every word as he told them how he had got his students to recite poetry to cows.
