‘Are these local, mate?’ Andy said to the butcher behind the counter. ‘These sausages here?’ He pointed to a bundle of sausages in the display counter. ‘They’re from round here, yeah?’

‘Yes, they are. Very local,’ the butcher replied. ‘The meat in them sausages hasn’t even been to Suffolk, let alone anywhere foreign.’

‘They’re a bit on the expensive side, aren’t they?’

‘You get what you pay for, sunshine.’ Andy looked at the butcher with a critical eye as he said this. It wasn’t his money that he was spending, but even so, two quid for a sausage was taking the piss just a little bit.

‘Have you got any sausage meat?’

‘Yes, I have. How much do you want?’

‘Er, not sure. Medium size bag?’ Andy replied. ‘And eight sausages.’

‘No problemo, compadre. Coming right up.’

Andy watched as the butcher wrapped a bunch of sausages for him and put them on the counter with a bag of what he assumed was sausage meat. No problemo? Compadre? All a bit weird as far as Andy was concerned. Even though Andy didn’t have any children, he knew one thing for certain. He wouldn’t let this man babysit if he did.

‘How much is that, then?’ Andy asked.

‘Well,’ the butcher replied, extending out the word with his tongue. ‘That should be twenty-five quid, but seeing as you’re a new customer, I’ll do it for twenty.’

‘Bargain,’ Andy said, not even trying to hide the sarcasm in his voice. ‘Can I get a receipt though?’

‘Course you can.’

Andy waited for the butcher to fill out the receipt. As he was putting the sausages and bag of sausage meat into his bag, Andy heard the bell over the top of the door tinkle. He turned to see the woman he’d just held the door open for walk back into the shop.

‘Is that your yellow sports car in the car park?’ she said. Andy looked at her. She was pretty, that was for sure. Very pretty. And also familiar, but Andy couldn’t work out where from.

‘Er, yeah, it is. Sorry. Am I blocking you in?’ he said.

‘Just a bit.’

‘I’m just buying some sausages. Can I have two seconds?’ Andy looked at the butcher who had stopped writing the receipt and was looking at the new arrival with a crooked smile. The woman didn’t reply, but just fixed the butcher with a withering look. Andy looked at her, trying to work out where he knew her from.

A few minutes later, he was following her into the car park. She stood by her Mini, arms crossed, looking at him with an annoyed expression. He definitely knew her from somewhere. Andy blipped the remote, unlocking his car, and decided to take a chance. The young woman was very attractive, so he decided to throw caution to the winds. He twiddled his MG Owners Club key ring in his hands to hide his nervousness.

‘Look, sorry, I know this sounds like a line. But do I know you from somewhere?’

‘Don’t think so.’

‘Oh, okay, sorry. It’s just you look really familiar, that’s all.
