“That went well,” Callie said as she caught up to her mother.

“Didn’t it just?”

“I’m sorry, Mum. I’d been thinking about it all day, and I suppose I became a bit blinkered. I couldn’t see a solution other than the one I’d come up with.”

“There were never going to be any good outcomes to that particular problem, but saying that, I think I’d prefer the two of us to talk things through before heading into the lion’s den in the future.”

“I’m sorry. You’re right. I should have talked it over with you. We should have tried to come up with something together.”

“Well. Thank God for Dani.”

“Yeah. I thought that was going to descend into a punch-up.”

“I don’t think, for a second, the worst of this is behind us. When word starts spreading around the camp, there’s going to be trouble.” She turned to her daughter as they paused in the doorway of their small house. “There’s nothing I’d like more than to be there with you tomorrow, but I think I’m going to be putting out fires here. Stick with Drake and Greenslade. Promise me.”

“Despite what you might think, Mum, I don’t like taking risks.”

“Ha. You could have fooled me.”

“I’m going to ask Si to go with you as well.”

“No,” Callie said.

“What do you mean?”

“You said it yourself. You’re going to be putting out fires here tomorrow. I’ll have Drake and Greenslade with me. You need someone here who you can trust.”

“Hey.” The pair jumped, turning suddenly to see Drake and Marina standing there.

“It’s true,” Susan said. “Speak of the devil and he shall appear.”

Drake smiled. “Marina’s going to be here tomorrow in case there’s any kickback from this.”

“Oh, I’m pretty certain there’s going to be some kickback, but I’m not sure if a show of strength from the old guard is going to do anything to relieve the tension.”

“Maybe not,” Drake replied. “But I’d rather you had them here just in case.”

“Okay,” Susan replied.

Drake turned to Callie. “We’ll set off at dawn. We’re going to take a hundred militia as well as the standard trading party. You sort that out. I’ll sort the militia out.” He turned, and the two former Salvation guards disappeared as quickly as they had arrived.

“Nicola did well. I’ll ask her if she’d be willing to head out again,” Susan said.

“Okay,” Callie replied. “I’ll go repack my rucksack.”
