Chapter 14

Phil couldn’t sleep, which wasn’t unusual in itself. There were plenty of times when his mind couldn’t switch off as he tried to solve problem after problem. But today, he couldn’t sleep for another reason. He was worried about Callie and Dani and Susan and Drake and, although he didn’t want to admit it, every last man and woman who had gone to Infinity.

More than that, he was worried about all the people who had stayed behind too. There was an inevitability to what was happening. This was the end game and the odds were stacked against them despite Drake’s determination and zeal.

Yes, there were a lot of them, and yes, they were fighting for something. They had a half-decent supply of weapons, but Bucks had been making preparations and the resources available to Salvation made theirs pale in comparison.

The patients had been moved to the old infirmary and they had their house back for the time being at least, which provided some small amount of normality at a time that was anything but normal. The embers in the fireplace were still throwing out a glow and, although diluted by the curtain partition, he could make out Debbie’s eyes were firmly closed and he could hear from the heavy rhythmical breathing that Matt was still deep in slumber.

Phil pulled back the sheet and got up, stepping out of the small living quarters. A snore sounded to his left and he could only assume it was from Bindi. He smiled. He joked about having to share a house, but he liked Bindi immensely. She was funny and intelligent and shared the same hopes and ambitions for Redemption that he did. The last two days had weighed heavy on them both. All the conversations they’d had about the future were now on the verge of crashing down around them. It was hard to be optimistic. It was hard to think that there would be something after this.

He stepped out into the night air with a view to taking a walk through the fields. The fields always put his mind at ease. They presented order in a disordered world. Nature was all about balance and so were the crops. They gave him peace.

He was about to start in their direction when he noticed a solitary figure by the fire. Is that Marina? He felt certain that there would be patrols, especially after what had happened, but the last thing he had expected to see was her sitting there by herself.

He crept towards her, wondering if she may have somehow fallen asleep in an upright position. If that was the case, he didn’t want to disturb her. She would need all the rest she could get for what was coming.

“When I was in Africa, there were elephants who made less noise than you,” she called over her shoulder as he approached.

Phil chuckled. “How the hell did you know it was me?”

“I caught sight of you stepping out of the door. I figured you’d head towards the fields like you usually do, but failing that, you’d notice me here.
