This section of the building wasn’t lit, and Nazya only hoped that there weren’t any Salvation guards lurking anywhere because the small torch beam would instantly pinpoint them. The two women walked side by side, their shoulders brushing against each other for comfort. They moved quickly but not so quickly that their boots would echo down the labyrinthine corridors.

BOOM!

Both women froze. For a second, they couldn’t understand what had made the thundering noise, but as shouts and the sound of running feet reverberated towards them, they understood that the guards had returned.

“Oh shit,” Chloe hissed.

Nazya flicked off her torch and took her friend’s hand. They both looked back to the dim glow of the main corridor behind them, but they were otherwise surrounded by darkness. They continued into the black beyond with nothing to guide them but their memories. In all the time they’d been here, they had probably only visited the boiler room and this part of the building once. There was nothing here, and a funny smell remained that some swore were burst sewer pipes but were probably just blocked drains.

“I think we turn left soon,” Nazya whispered, and both women shuffled over to the wall, feeling it out in the blackness, hoping they would find the turn before the guards found them.

“I don’t remember. I don’t remember anything about this place.”
