Thirteen

He’s been sleeping in my spare room for almost a week now.

He didn’t put up much of a fight that night, muttered something about not being able to find his keys, then needing to use the bathroom before he left. I showed him the room, he almost fell on the bed and the rest, as they say, is history.

It’s been surprisingly easy. He’s easy to live with. Undemanding, tidy, cleans up after himself, happy to help with washing up and washes his own clothes of which there were many festering in his van. But I don’t mind.

I’ve paid him now too. We’re fully up to date on the stage payments. He’s also insisting on paying me for his accommodation, which seems very bizarre, but I’ve given up arguing. I’ll just save the money and give it to him as a cash bonus when the building work is complete. It’s coming on in leaps and bounds now the roof is on and the building is weatherproof.

I’m up very early today, showered and dressed in my supermarket uniform because today is my first day back at work. I really don’t want to go but I have to. Everything has to appear normal. While no one I work with would notice Micky’s absence because they’ve never met him they might notice any out of the ordinary behaviour from me. Not going back to work after I’ve worked so many extra shifts to pay for this wretched extension would look odd. Also, I do need to pay the mortgage. Despite all the money Micky’s accumulated, I do need an income.

Mik is already working away. He’s doing as much as he can before he has to knock through because, he says, that is going to be chaos. I can’t say I’m looking forward to it but at least if I’m at work I’ll miss the worst of it. I hope.

I’m taking the car because, why not? No one is going to notice or ask. I’ve checked the insurance document which took a lot of finding because Micky kept everything like that secret – I don’t know why. I found it in a tin box on the top of his wardrobe. It also contained various other documents as well as his driving licence and passport. He looks so young on his passport photograph, but he would have only been about thirty when it was taken. His passport is due to expire the month after next. I won’t be renewing that. But I don’t think the passport office will think it’s odd, he hasn’t been abroad since I’ve been with him. Anyway, do they even check things like that? I very much doubt it. I don’t have a passport, never needed one.

Work is what work is. Everyone is being very careful with me because they all know why I’ve been off. No one mentions babies or children or anything that might upset me. And I’m working the dayshift with no extras at the moment, eight to four with half an hour for lunch.
