There are plenty of ways you can get a shock. Sticking your finger in a plug socket. Putting a knife into a toaster when it’s turned on. Or simply feeling the static from the seat when you get into your car. But these days, you can get just as much of a shock from turning on the television and watching the news. That’s what I just got.

A shock, and a bloody big one at that.

Apparently, Claire King is now the prime suspect in the murder of her ex-husband, Andy.

Claire. The woman I embarked on an affair with. The woman I thought I loved once. And the woman who did her best to blow up my marriage after I spurned her and chose my wife instead.

At the time, I thought I’d been unlucky that Claire had decided to tell Alison everything, but watching the news now, maybe I was wrong. Maybe I should consider myself lucky because things could clearly have been much worse. Claire could have got revenge on me in a much more brutal way, just like she did to poor Andy.

I might be lucky to be alive.

But that concept is based on these news reports being true, and I’m not sure they are. Could Claire really have killed Andy? While it might seem like she had the motive after he cheated on her and gave her little option but to divorce him, I’m not sure that means she would have felt the need to go and butcher him to death in his new home. That just doesn’t seem like something Claire could do because while she is many things, I seriously doubt she is a killer.

Then again, who knows? She could be a complete psycho, and the police wouldn’t have taken her in unless they had real evidence to put alongside the motive.

There is no doubt that this is crazy news, and it’s the kind that requires urgent alcohol intake to help process. That’s why I find myself taking a cold beer from the fridge before returning to the TV and watching to see if there are any more updates on this shocking case. But there are none. Just that endless clip of footage being played over and over again on a loop, the one which shows Claire being taken from her home and into the back of a police car. It’s the same home where I spent many a secretive hour behind my wife’s back, although I didn’t see much of the property other than the bedroom. But now that property is famous, being broadcast on TV screens all over town and probably the country, known for being the home of an alleged killer who mercilessly murdered her ex-husband to get revenge on his cheating ways.

I wonder if the house will become one of those places where local kids gather after school and gossip about the dangerous woman who used to live there as the property stands empty, struggling to be resold thanks to its connection to a grim past.
