* Exercise-induced breathlessness is a typical indication that you’re overusing your accessory breathing muscles. It’s normal to recruit some accessory breathing muscles during physical exercise, but if you’re overinflating the ribs (through the front, back or both), and/or not exhaling properly, then exercising can quickly reveal problems with your breathing pattern.

See your doctor for a check-up if you’re experiencing exercise-induced breathlessness that feels disproportionate to the level of exercise you’re doing. It’s also helpful to visit a respiratory physiotherapist for a breathing pattern review. They excel at identifying breathing problems that result from a restricted diaphragm, and can prescribe respiratory muscle-training exercises.

*Although breathing guidelines will often try and categorise you as a particular kind of ‘breather’, there’s no agreed-upon classification. In fact, there’s anything from three to nine types of ‘breathers’, depending on what you read. Simply use this system here as a guideline for what your breathing tendencies might be.
