EVE

ONE YEAR AGO

I knock on Leanne’s door, excited to see my friend and spend a fun evening with her. Her house really is beautiful, and it’s one of the reasons why I’m happy to take her up on her invite to come over. It’s better than going out in town or, worse, back to the poxy flat I’m living in at present.

‘Hi, babe! Come in!’ Leanne says with her usual energy as she opens the door. I’m armed with the things I always bring when we are having a girly night in. The essentials consist of wine, chocolates, and a couple of cheap and trashy gossip magazines that we like to flick through and laugh over.

‘Wow, I love the coffee table,’ I say when I enter the living room. The latest piece of furniture my friend has bought makes her lovely home look even nicer.

‘Thanks. It was a bargain, actually. There was a sale at the market last weekend.’

‘You got this at the market?’

‘Yeah, I know, crazy, right? It’s second-hand but it’s gorgeous, isn’t it? I can’t believe what some people throw away.’

I smile at my friend, because this is typical of her. Even though she is doing very well for herself financially, she is not above going down to the local market and picking up an item of previously owned furniture. That’s just another thing I love about Leanne. She has no airs or graces and never makes me feel like she is better than me. But if anybody did a comparison study of the pair of us, she would most definitely score higher.

Leanne tells me to make myself comfortable while she goes into the kitchen to get two wine glasses. I do as she says, taking a seat on the sofa, feeling relaxed now that I’m here again. I love this place, and I love hanging out with my best friend. I just wish we could do it as often as we used to. But as we’ve gotten older, things have changed a little on that front, as they tend to do for so many adults when relationships and work get in the way. While I don’t have much going on either front, Leanne certainly is busy. She starts by telling me all about how well things are going in her workplace, which is a fast-paced lawyer’s office. Long hours, expensive clients and big bonuses are just a way of life.

‘I didn’t get home until after midnight on Monday,’ my friend tells me with a shake of her head. ‘What a start to the week.’

I can scarcely comprehend being needed in a workplace so much that one would be required to work such long hours. I’m certainly not needed that much in mine. But like the considerate friend that she is, Leanne doesn’t spend too long talking about herself. She asks me how things are going at my office.

‘Yeah, it’s fine, I suppose,’ I reply, displaying all the weariness of an employee lacking passion for their job.

‘Any chance of going full-time like you were hoping for?’

‘No, there hasn’t been a decision made yet.
