The Antidote for the Plague of Perfectionism: Learning from Your Mistakes
As founder and CEO of BroadbandTV, Shahrzad Rafati says that she looks at every mistake as a lesson. She’s become okay with making mistakes, and doing so has made her very successful. Instead of cowering from her mistakes, she wants to understand how her mistakes affect her business. Whether it’s a significant error in judgment or a minor oversight, she strives to find value in every outcome. Shahrzad has found that perfection doesn’t exist.3
The number one reason people give in to the fear of failure is that they can’t seem to land on their preconceived idea of perfection. That’s right; the fear of failure typically begins before you even start. Some people will never reach their full potential because of this false belief that perfection is somehow obtainable, but I agree with Shahrzad: perfection doesn’t exist. Knowing this, we can fight the fear of failure by continuing without losing our passion, as we learn from each mistake we make along the way.
It is in this perseverance through the mistakes we make along the way that bravery is lived out. Once you decide that perfection isn’t attainable, you learn to enjoy the process and to never stop improving. Stop being so hard on yourself, and know that making mistakes is just another part of being human. You don’t have to be perfect to help people.
The question then becomes, what will you do with your mistakes? Will you sulk and go down with the ship or will you adapt to what life throws your way and rise to the occasion? The key to bravery is getting back up and trying again and again and again. So, what if we saw the act of getting up after making mistakes as the true start of learning? You can use your mistakes as stepping-stones to the next thing instead of seeing them as obstacles that stop you in your tracks. The choice is yours.
Because mistakes are inevitable, we need to learn how to embrace them. Stop allowing yourself to be caged in by perfection and instead start thinking of how you can change things through your messy mistakes. Bravery takes shape as we make mistakes in the areas we care most about, and learn from them. With mistakes, new possibilities often open wide, to bring success into reality. The willingness to make better mistakes gives you the freedom to pour your heart and soul into what you do.
Make glorious mistakes along the way, because a world without mistakes is a world without creativity, and that’s a drab world nobody wants to live in. When you take the freedom to make mistakes, you will find that confusion can be turned into learning, sparking beautiful opportunities for potential, remarkable objects of creation, and continual reminders of why we create in the first place. We all can use our unique passions to embark on our very own creative journey. You are a genius, with passions and gifts only you possess.
