Since my mobilization I have often thought about Kafka; he would have liked this war; it would have been a good subject for him. He would have shown a man, Gregory K, stubbornly looking for war everywhere, feeling its threat everywhere, and yet never finding it.

Sartre felt like a warrior manqué, a frustrated would-be hero. Here is a typical day in Sartre’s war, detailing his part in Hitler’s downfall, during the period when his regiment is located in a school:

7 a.m.: Hearty breakfast at Le Boeuf noir or Le Lion d’Or.

8 a.m.: Start work at school desk (either philosophy or a novel or memoirs).

Lunch: leisurely, two hours (when he ‘writes less’).

Then back to desk till around 9 p.m. Dinner and conversation.
