Charity waited until Boone and Rachel were distracted with their goodbyes to the sheriff to slip quietly from the room. Since Lucy was still attending her art lesson, she had a few minutes to spare and knew exactly where she wanted to spend those minutes.
She stood outside the door where he was housed in the servantsâ quarters and raised her hand. A flood of misgivings made her hesitate before knocking.
What am I doing? I barely know the man. The best I can probably do for him is to keep walking and let him rest.
âGo on in, Mrs. Charity.â Pansyâs voice drifted down the dimly lit hallway.
âOh!â Charity jolted in surprise, lowering her hand to her side. âI didnât see you.â It had been so quiet in the hallway that sheâd assumed she was alone.
Pansy was perched on a chair half in and half out of the kitchen, shelling peas while apparently keeping an eye on Schmidtâs door. It was a rather endearing gesture on her part, one that indicated just how far Schmidt had already wormed his way into the hearts of Rachel and Booneâs staff.
âWould you like some help with the peas?â It seemed like the proper thing to ask, though Charity knew it was more than that. She was stalling.
âIâm nearly finished. Go on and pay the man a visit,â Pansy urged with a firm nod. âHeâs been asking for you.â
He has? Warmth and wonder flooded Charityâs insides. Without wasting any more time warring with her better judgment, she raised her hand and gave a soft knock. When their patient didnât answer, she tentatively cracked the door open and peeked inside. He appeared to be sleeping. After another moment of hesitation, she shrugged and let herself silently into the room. Maybe she would wait for a spell on the stool beside his bed. If he didnât awaken soon, sheâd take her leave of him and return when he was more lucid.
âI was wondering if youâd come back.â Schmidtâs words wafted her way, less slurred than before.
Her heart leaped at the sound of his voice. She eagerly sought him out in the dimness and was puzzled to find his eyes were still closed. âHow did you know it was me?â
âEveryone has a sound,â he muttered. âMost people donât pay any attention to it, but yours is light. Graceful.â
She looked suspiciously around the room but could see no reason for him to be talking out of his head in such a manner. âDid Pansy give you a nip of something to help with the pain?â She eyed the pitcher of water on the nightstand with suspicion.
He snorted. âIâm not intoxicated, if thatâs what you mean, darling.â
Darling! She stood riveted just inside the door. For a man who claimed to be sober, he sure was spouting stuff and nonsense.
âYou said you wanted to talk earlier,â he pressed. âSo talk.â
âI, erâ¦â She slowly glided to his bedside and took a seat on the stool, spreading her calico skirts around her. Earlier, there
