Downhill running
Purpose: Downhill running increases the workload on your front thighs (quadriceps), triggering greater strength adaptations in those muscles.
This isn’t a workout for inexperienced runners. But it’s a great workout for runners interested in increasing their speed or running a race that includes downhill segments (e.g., the Boston Marathon). It’s also a terrific cure for chronic quadriceps pain, which is why you’ll find it explained in the Injury-Prevention Exercises. For experienced runners, downhill running is a nice change of pace from weekly hill reps, speed work, or drills.
