Chapter Twenty-three

When Hannah and Kat arrived back at the safehouse, Nick was waiting. His face had the serious look that Kat was learning meant he was in pure work mode.

“The doctor’s dead?” he blurted out as soon as the front door was shut behind them. Immediately retreating, Hannah pointed down the hall.

“I’m just gonna… go somewhere else,” she said, hustling away. The two agents on the couch seemed to sense some sort of confrontation and tried to make themselves look busy as well.

But Kat was defensive. It almost sounded like Nick was accusing her of pulling the trigger. “Yes. And hello to you too,” she said.

“Stop with the jokes. What the hell is going on here? People are getting assassinated left and right and you’re what? Laughing it off?” he asked, his eyes narrowed.

Crossing her arms, Kat raised an eyebrow. “You’re the one that’s always joking. I’m just trying to lighten the mood.”

He rubbed his hand roughly over his forehead. “Kat, this is getting out of hand,” he said.

“I know. I said the same thing to my boss,” she admitted. He slapped his hands on his own thighs and yelled out a curse.

“We’ve got nothing. You realize that?” He was starting towards the kitchen and Kat followed behind him.

"John said it happened right after shift change. That’s something."

With a dismissive shake of his head, he reached into the fridge and grabbed two waters. Speaking in a low, contemplative voice, he posed a question, "But how the hell did this person know exactly when there was a shift change?"

Kat was at a loss, unable to provide an answer. The only certainty was that their suspect had been watching the facility. Nick muttered something under his breath, capturing Kat's attention.

"They must have a background in law enforcement or the military, maybe even both.”

Furrowing her eyebrows, a plan began to take shape in Kat's mind. "We need access to the ATF's registry. We'll examine the ballistics report and the airport surveillance footage," she said.

Nick's jaw clenched; his gaze fixed forward. Despite the frustration written all over his face, he handed over a bottle of water.

“I can get that,” he said. The seriousness on his face had given way to something more like focus. With something to do, his anger seemed to have ebbed away. “I’ll call them now.” Without explaining anything more, he walked down the hall to Kat’s room. Some anger must have been lingering as he did slam the door behind him.

Closing her eyes, Kat took a moment to shake off the tension, willing her heart rate to return to normal. If Nick wanted to throw a fit and pout, that was fine by her. But she had better things to do. When she opened her eyes, she turned back around and flashed Alvarez a smile.

“Afternoon, Cowboy,” she said.

He touched the brim of his hat. “Busy day?”

Kat gave him a nod and took a sip of her own drink as she plopped onto the couch beside him. “You have no idea,” Kat managed.
