TAKING BACK THE REINS

In 2014 I was thrust into the position of having to ‘re-lead’ my own organisation. Why I say ‘re-lead’ in inverted commas is because, if I am honest, I never consciously led the organisation prior to 2014; I simply shared the vision again and again and worked hard, but randomly, with no plan or strategy to achieve it, hoping others would follow suit. That was my idea of leadership and strategy.

The crisis was so big in my mind that it produced months of reflection, loss of confidence, even a little depression, and ultimately ignited two journeys for me in my life: my journey to understand the concept of strategy better, and my journey to understand and own the concept of my leadership role better.

I started to read prolifically. I set up meeting after meeting with leaders and strategists in my network, taking copious notes and spending hours debating and working out what worked for me and what didn’t. This journey of intentional discovery has, until today, never stopped. I decided to build a model, a methodology, an approach that could be used by both myself in Raizcorp, and also by the entrepreneurs who were leading organisations we had invested in. Surely if I was going through this crisis, they would go through something similar themselves as their businesses scaled! In 2014 I began to build what is now called Flowcode, a methodology to capture the vision and purpose of an organisation and then meticulously and elaborately build the strategy to fulfil that vision and, most importantly, provide the entrepreneur with the ability to effectively lead that strategy. Strategy and leadership were now clearly linked.
