Bubba and Newsome sat in their car in the parking lot of the jail, staring out at the trees.

“Now what? Wanna go check out the butcher?”

Bubba rolled down the window, ran his finger across his gums to spit out his tobacco, then reached for the tin he kept in his back pocket to get another pinch.

“Not sure there's any point. I mean, we ain't got no prints, we ain't got no head, we ain't got nothing. Maybe some DNA, if he's a perp, but-”

Bubba closed his mouth, squinting, meditative. Newsome stared at him a moment.

“I've seen that look before. You got some hare-brained idea.”

Bubba smiled, settled the dip behind his lip with his tongue, and chuckled.

“Oh, I've got an idea, and I think it's a good one, but you ain't gonna like it. Hell, I don't even like it.”

“I don't like any of your ideas, why would this one be any different?”

“Funny, you already called me a genius once today for one of my great ideas.”

“Funny, I don't recall you actually having any ideas today.”

After a brief silence, Bubba said, “Well, you wanna hear my idea or not?”

“Shoot.”

“TNT.”

“What?”

“You know what I'm talking about. TNT.”

Newsome stared at Bubba, then his eyes widened.

“Are you kidding me?”

“He's got the only K9 worth a damn in Middle Georgia.”

“Didn't you just make us stare down at the ground so he didn't recognize us? Now you want to mix him up in this case?”

Bubba remained silent while Newsome began tapping his fingers against the steering wheel.

“Yeah, well, you can call him. I ain't calling him.”

Thomas Nathan Thomas was a K9 handler and deputy sheriff employed by Crawford County, the same deputy that had filled his tank while they hosed down Rocko's good eye.

Because Crawford County was so small, Thomas was also the bomb disposal officer, the evidence supervisor, the training coordinator, and the quartermaster. Each was a part time assignment, but together minimized his interaction with the public; at least that was the sheriff's intention.

Thomas preferred for people to call him TNT, but most of the deputies started calling him Idi Amin after the sheriff saw him with all his patches, stripes, and medals, and grumbled that he looked like “that crazy African dictator.”

Thomas filled the free space on his brown uniform like a developer plunking condos in a corn field, and according to the county attorney, there was nothing the sheriff could do about the artistic license TNT took because the department’s uniform and appearance policy didn’t expressly prohibit it.

The other deputies frequently complained about him, but the sheriff weathered the storm because although Thomas looked ridiculous, he actually was competent and took all his collateral assignments seriously.

The sheriff carefully chose his battles; he would never authorize Flowers to have lights and a siren, but gave Thomas enough freedom to festoon his uniform with flair.

Thomas acquired Nitro last year, after the dog bit his Macon PD handler. The dog was sent to be euthanized by the city's shelter, but Thomas somehow learned about the incident and intervened.
