Intimacy

When the anointing of the Holy Spirit comes, it causes the burden of other people’s expectations to be shaken off and we see God’s power in action. But opening ourselves up to the Holy Spirit’s ministry also gives rise to intimacy.

1 Samuel 10:1 explains how God chose Saul to be the first king of Israel:

“Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, ‘Has not the Lord anointed you leader over his inheritance?’”

The flask would have contained a large amount of oil. When that much oil is poured on someone it makes a mess! Do we sometimes limit what the Holy Spirit wishes to do because it may be messy? Because we don’t want to make a spectacle of ourselves? In fact, it is God who is making a spectacle of Himself. It is about Him, not us. Yet our cultural norms can stop us from really being ourselves – people who want to have an intimate relationship with Him.

When Samuel kissed Saul this signified the intimacy that comes through the anointing. Out of this comes destiny and calling – Saul was chosen to lead Israel. I believe that there is a “kiss of intimacy” that releases us into our destiny and calling, and it comes through the anointing and the pouring out of the Holy Spirit.
