Old mill gears, brick warehouse, Scott County. Early distilleries began on mill sites. Within this early bourbon warehouse are items that were used to grind grains and meal on a stone. It is not known whether they are original to the site’s earliest building, but they probably were used at some point in distilling activities.

Blue door latch, J. E. Pepper Distillery, Lexington. Years of paint, rust, and weathering have transformed the latch on this fire door to an abstraction. The great variation in color indicates the effect of intense heat. It is obvious throughout all the distilleries just how much heat transformed the visual environment over time.
