CHAPTER 17

Jackson looked up from his desk to see Ethan standing in the doorway. His face was grave in a way Jackson had very rarely seen from his friend.

Jackson looked at him, keeping his face calm. “What’s up?” he asked.

Ethan walked in and carefully closed the door behind himself. Then he reached over and pulled the blinds as well, cutting off the rest of the floor.

“Jax,” he said, sitting in front of the desk instead of at his usual spot on the couch. “We’ve had another leak.”

“How?” Jackson asked, his stomach falling. “Is there anything left for them to leak?”

“The Omni.”

No. The Omni was the upcoming showcase of Knight Enterprise’s technology division. It was going to completely change how people used financial apps. Unlike the other apps that had been leaked, The Omni was a classified project, with only higher-ups knowing any of the details.

Jackson sighed, rubbing his temples. “So that means…”

Ethan nodded. “Exactly.”

“We’re not dealing with an angry intern trying to make a few extra bucks on the side.”

“This is serious stuff,” Ethan said. “Jackson, that was supposed to be the centerpiece of the next year. We’ve got appearances and presentations already in the works. If Knight Enterprises was going to have anything front and center for all of its divisions, not just tech, it was The Omni. And now yet another small scale business with no background information is releasing an app with the same exact specs.”

“Even the proprietary data?”

Jackson knew the answer even before he finished asking. Ethan nodded. “Whoever it is leaked both the app plans and the blueprints for the Knight Enterprises-specific software.”

“Unbelievable.”

Jackson leaned back in his chair and sighed, running a hand through his hair. “This needs to stop,” he said. “It’s clearly someone with access, which narrows it down a lot, but not enough.”

“I’ve got a few ideas in mind,” Ethan said. “But nothing solid yet. I’ve got some time in my schedule later today, let’s get together and discuss them.”

“Perfect,” Jackson said. “I’ve got a couple of slots free, go talk to Anita and have her put you in. I’d do it myself, but frankly, I’m too important.”

Ethan laughed. “No, you just don’t remember your own schedule.”

“Then you’re better off talking to Anita anyway.”

Jackson smirked as Ethan’s face turned light red. “Your crush on my assistant is adorable,” he said.

“Shut up!” Ethan hissed, darting a look toward the blocked window.

Jackson was about to say something else when there was a knock at his door. “Come in!” he called.

Anita walked in and Ethan’s face turned three shades redder. Jackson smirked, then turned back to Anita with his professional veneer back in place. “Anita, what can I do for you?”

“I’m placing the flower order for your mother,” Anita said. “I just wanted to confirm it with you before submitting because the notes were a little vague. You want the rose and baby’s breath arrangement, correct?”

“Yeah, thanks, Anita,” Jackson said.

Emma’s eyes came into his mind unbidden. “Actually-” Jackson started as Anita was turning for the door.
