“HOW RICH?” CLARIS ASKED the next day. She had come to help stage Letty’s mom’s house for the photoshoot.

Letty picked up a throw pillow off the living room sofa and gave it a good fluffing. “You aren’t listening to me! He lied. He’s a liar. He’s not at all who I thought he was.”

“But I kind of get it. Don’t you? Remember Jenna?” Claris spritzed the piano with furniture polish and ran a rag over it.

Jenna had been gorgeous in junior high and had started her modeling career while she was still in high school.

“Remember how she said she liked taking online classes because she could get to know people without them being dazzled or put off by her looks?”

“Poor little beauty queen!” Letty attacked another pillow. “So sad for her to have all those guys panting after her.”

Claris shook her dust rag at Letty. “But not because of who she was! Not really.”

Letty saw Claris’s point, but she didn’t want to admit it. She put her hands on her hips and surveyed the living room. “Maybe it would look better empty.”

“You don’t mean that.”

Letty sighed, plopped down on the sofa, and put her head in her hands. She addressed the floor. “But would it be easier on everyone if my mom just ripped off the bandage, moved to Arizona, and got on with her new life?”

“She doesn’t want to move to Arizona.”

“But it’s the practical thing to do.”

“She doesn’t want to be practical.” Claris sat down beside Letty.

“I could get a nursing job in Arizona, too.”

“Oh, sweetie.” Claris wrapped her arm around Letty’s shoulder. “You’re getting by, right?”

Letty leaned against her friend. “But not really getting ahead. I feel like I’m always chasing my next paycheck.”

“Would you really be further ahead if you moved to Arizona?”

“If I lived with my mom and Marmmy? Absolutely.” Letty bit her lip and gazed out the window at the ocean view. The thought of losing her childhood home sparked her anger. Bouncing to her feet, she strode into the master bedroom to clean out her dad’s side of the closet and throw all his things away.

Or maybe just box them up.

“It’s not really Wes you’re mad at, is it? It’s your dad. He’s the one who lied. He’s the one who led you to believe he was someone other than himself.”

Letty leaned against the wall and studied her dad’s closet—the suits, ties, wingtip shoes—the clothes she’d seen him wear hundreds if not thousands of times to church. “How could he do this? How could he pretend to be such a spiritual man when he was stealing? What about the Ten Commandments? He was clearly breaking a ton of them. Thou shalt not steal, bear false witness, worship other gods, covet...”

“It’s not our place to judge,” Claris said, coming up behind her.

“I. Just. Don’t. Get. It.”

Claris put her hand on Letty’s shoulder. “And I love that about you. You see the world in black and white, right and wrong, truth and lies...but for the rest of us, the world is a murky gray.
