Sauk River Camp

near Osceola, MO 64776 (1 mile SW of town on Highway 82)

Historical marker and ideal picnic site. FREE. Wheelchair access: Rough ground. Info: St. Clair County Historical Society (Phone: 417-876-3925).

⇒ Our Take: Another reason to take the scenic drive to Osceola.

This overlook at the confluence of the Sac and Osage rivers was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, and completes a scenic drive along Highway 82 from El Dorado Springs. It offers a pleasing view of the lowlands where, as an impressive granite marker here notes, Gen. Sterling Price held camp in late 1861 for the purpose of recruiting men to the C.S.A. and Missouri State Guard. A shady picnic site overlooks this river view. You can fill your basket at Osceola Cheese on Highway 13. (We recommend anything with hot pepper.)
