“I’d met the Eagles when I was going to art school,” Boyd told me. “I had a big show in Venice, California, called ‘el Chingadero.’ Griffin did the invitation for it, which was a big map of me driving from Valentine to California. The Eagles only knew seven songs. The work I was doing then were seven and a half feet in diameter. After my studio burned, I painted those skulls, and a mutual friend of mine, Gary Burden, called me on my birthday of 1974 and they’d wanted to use Zacatecas on their cover, which they’d seen in a hotel room in Dallas with an image projected on a wall. So I came to Valentine, picked it up and drove it to California. Then I went to Montecedo and did the lettering with airbrush and pinstriping brushes.
“It was one of those things that just happened; I never wanted to do album covers in the first place. I was asked to work for Warner Brothers out of college but didn’t want to do that. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; America; Jackson Brown; Tom Waits; Joni Mitchell were all buddies of mine from LA. I was always around a lot of actors and writers also.”
One of Boyd’s most recent projects was designing the beer label for the Big Bend Brewery with a special blend they developed for their Valentine’s Day party in Valentine in 2014. “That was a piece called y6 sunrise,” says Boyd. “That’s the brand. Bode Means (their family property borders our property in Valentine) gave me that skull in the early ’80s, and it was a white face Hereford bull skull. I painted that sometime in the mid-’80s, and it was adhered to a big painted panel with a sunrise. The skull is from the Y6 and Moon Ranch.”
I asked Boyd to describe a normal day in Valentine. He said it was mostly quiet, but there was a lot of noise from trucks and trains. “A lot of people ranch,” he said, “but the main community is the school; it’s the only employer except for Red Brown, and he employs two truck drivers and that’s it.”
Boyd has applied for artisan residence in Marfa. He was one of the first people to show at the Ballroom Marfa and was close friends with Marfa elite Donald Judd from 1972 until Judd passed. Boyd is involved with the Prada Marfa art installation between Marfa and Valentine as well. “I put the place back together two days after it was vandalized in 2004,” he shares. Boyd remains active as the project representative.
