Every senior leader who worked at Amazon on Wednesday, June 9, 2004, remembers the email that popped into their inbox at 6:02 P.M.

Many Amazonians were enjoying the warmer-than-average summer day. It was seventy-six degrees, and “the mountain was out,” as Seattleites say when the majestic peak of Mount Rainier is in clear view. Seattle summers are short, and residents look forward to days when the sun doesn’t set until 9:00 P.M.

And then the email hit.

The message was “simple, direct, and earthshaking,” according to Colin Bryar, the executive who sent it on behalf of his boss. The subject line read:

No PowerPoint presentations from now on at S-Team.

A sudden chill had blown in, ruining the warm summer evening for those executives who had spent weeks finalizing their PowerPoint slides for the following Tuesday’s meeting. Bryar fielded a flurry of phone calls and a deluge of emails.

“Are you kidding?” executives asked. No, he wasn’t.

Bezos had banned PowerPoint at Amazon’s senior leadership meetings. Members of the teams who planned to present their ideas at the next meeting could still do so. They’d only have to make one change: replace PowerPoint slides with a short narrative memo.

No kidding.
