SO FAR, WE HAVE EXPLORED how we can use the three components of exposure—shutter speed, aperture, and ISO—to freeze our subjects, isolate focus, and creatively alter photographic results. The other goal regarding exposure is to make sure that the overall image is not too dark or too light. If you overexpose your image, you will risk losing detail in the highlights (referred to as “burning out the highlights”). If you underexpose the image, your shadows will “block up,” and the overall image will appear dark and unappealing. As with every other rule, there will be times when you want to purposely underexpose or overexpose your image for creative effects. An overly bright image is referred to as high key, while darker images are called low key.
When you’re photographing with a bright light source in the background, such as a window, the camera doesn’t know that the foreground is really what you want to be photographing. It treats all elements the same. In attempting to expose the background properly as well as the foreground, the camera will cause your subject to turn out dark while the outdoor scene outside the window is perfectly exposed. In a situation like this, the easiest solution is to reposition yourself or your subject so that there’s no bright window in the background. If you have a camera that allows you to lock exposure, you can lock exposure on the foreground element and then recompose. This will cause the background to be blown out while the subject is properly exposed.
