When photographing landscapes, look for powerful, simple subjects. For example, a single tree is one such subject. Whenever you notice a lone tree, stop and see if there’s an angle from which you can give it due justice. If you can create a clean, organized composition, go for it. Simple subjects have symbolic power and can be the beginnings of great compositions.

This goal of simplicity applies whether you’re working with a lone subject or a group of elements. Keep your compositions concise and to the point. If certain elements are distracting or are not crucial to what you’re trying to convey, move in closer or recompose to avoid including them in your view. Change your point of view or switch lenses or focal lengths if you have to. Crouch down low, or better yet, lie on your belly when you shoot. And before you shoot, scan the scene for the following distracting elements and eliminate them:

Telephone or power lines

Buildings

Street signs

Litter

Natural “litter” (such as dead leaves or twigs)
