I passed Saturday morning spending quality time with Nigel and Clementine and tidying the apartment. I was in such a good mood, I even called my parents for a brief chat, though it was limited to nonpersonal things. I was trying. At noon I motivated to lunch with Imogen and Ethan at Peacock Café in Georgetown. I wore my baseball cap for invisibility, saving my shower and hair wash for later. More than one wash a day could make my hair more limp (if that was possible), and I wasn’t taking any chances. After lunch I hurried home to get ready for my date. My preparations were more tactically planned than the invasion of Normandy, and would take approximately two hours. Most would cause me to suffer discomfort of some kind—plucking, waxing, scrubbing, exfoliating, and unnecessarily itchy face mask. Then there was the tedious drying of the hair and laborious selection of the outfit (time schedule allowing for several changes). Caleb’s preparations no doubt would take twenty minutes and involve (1) taking a shower (maybe) and (2) combing his hair (maybe).

At six-thirty I was ready astonishingly early, because I’d chosen my outfit (7 For All Mankind Jeans, Juicy Couture sweater, and red cowboy boots) without second-guessing. So I had to sit on my hands for half an hour and fend off Nigel’s snuggle assaults so I didn’t get covered in cat fur. Like that worked. At seven on the dot I defurred with the lint roller and hailed a cab.

Caleb opened the door and gave me his heart-stopping smile. My heart actually did stop. He drew me in for a kiss. “Good to see you,” he murmured against my lips.

“Good to see you back,” I agreed breathlessly, pressing against him.

After a minute he pulled back. “Come in. Hey, I got you something.”

“You did? What is it?” I bubbled with delight as I followed him in. He grinned and tossed me a plastic bag. I looked inside and pulled out an I HOUSTON T-shirt.

“Awww. It’s so sweet. I especially like how they spell out ‘love’ inside the heart, in case you weren’t sure what it meant.”

“I thought you’d like it,” Caleb said. “It was either that, a Gay Asian Pride Houston T-shirt with a rainbow yin yang on it, or a T-shirt that said, ‘Everything’s bigger in Texas except my boyfriend’s small penis,’ which would not do.” I felt a jolt. Boyfriend? Bliss.

“It’s perfect. I love it.”

“There’s more.” He handed me a plain white envelope with a picture of a bow drawn on it in red pen. I opened it curiously. Inside was an airplane ticket stub from Houston to Dubai. “I wanted you to know I wasn’t jerking you around,” he said, and pulled me over for a long slow kiss. I thought I might melt or weep, I was so gooey.

“Come into the den.” He tugged my hand. “I built a fire. Would you like some wine?”

“Yes, please.” I contentedly settled myself onto his squishy leather sofa. Especially contented when he sat too and pulled me back against him.
