The marble angels are back in their original places, here at sundown. In the background: the S-Bahn, Schwindsuchtbrücke, and the last remnant of the Wall.

Theodor Fontane, the great Berlin journalist, novelist, and poet, who was a descendant of a Huguenot family, was buried in the French Cemetery with his wife, Emilie. His grave was destroyed in World War II. The tombstone has been restored, but their bones are lost. Leopold Arends, the inventor of stenography, is also laid to rest.

A part of the Hinterland Wall that ran through the French and St. Hedwig’s cemeteries has been preserved as a landmark.
