CHAPTER 66

PAISLEY, OREGON

Drake wasn’t sure what to think or do. Eve made no alarming moves. She sat quietly, downright meekly, in a chair, answering their questions. He had to keep reminding himself of all the woman had done to not feel for her.

But he couldn’t help thinking how alone she seemed, how burdened. But that did not mean that she was helping them, despite what she claimed.

He flicked a glance at the screen in the corner of the room. Laney was still out there fighting, and he was standing here with her killer, debating.

But it was that thought that stayed his hand. Laney’s body was still in Colorado, and yet she was being spotted simultaneously across the globe. Something else was at play here. And as much as it galled him to let Eve continue to breathe, they needed to at least try and get some answers from her.

Although so far, he did not like how evasive she was being.

“How is Samyaza part of this?” Simone asked.

Looking up, Eve frowned. “Samyaza? He’s not part of this at all.”

Her surprise seemed real. But apparently Gerard wasn’t convinced. He scoffed. “Come on. Samyaza is the leader of the Fallen. He has his powers back. Of course he’s part of this.”

Eve shook her head. “The Fallen, they’re not part of this, or at least not critical to this. They’re gnats compared to the archons.”

“Gedeon’s a gnat?” Gerard demanded.

Eve paused. “No, he’s . . . different.”

“And he’s part of this, right?” Brielle asked.

“He’s a puppet, not the puppet master. He’s—”

A gasp from Simone caused Eve to turn her head, following Simone’s gaze. On the screen was a closeup of Molly. Her appearance was jarring. While Molly was normally pale, her pallor was downright ashen. It was clear she was struggling under a tremendous burden. Her whole body trembled as she stood, and then her knee buckled. She stumbled.

In a flash, Eve dashed from her chair and bolted from the room.

That liar. With a roar, Drake took off after her.

Eve didn’t hesitate, despite the hallway filled with the Final Guard. She bowled through them as if they were human, flinging them into the walls as she bulldozed passed them. And as though the woman had said her intentions out loud, Drake knew without a doubt as he followed in her wake that she was heading for Molly.

He pictured Mary Jane sitting next to Molly’s bed. His chest tightened at the idea of something happening to the kind woman.

He put on a burst of speed, but despite the exhaustion that seemed to line Eve’s face, she stayed out of reach. She careened around a corner and then darted through the doorway of Molly’s room.

Mary Jane let out a cry as Drake barreled in behind her.

Eve lunged for the bed, crashing into the chair that Joe had just scrambled out of. The chair hit Joe’s side as Eve latched on to Molly’s hand and gripped it tight.

Mary Jane stood up, backing away, her terrified gaze locked on Eve.
