CHAPTER THIRTEEN

When Anthony returned to the picnic area, Gabriella and Allie were nowhere to be seen. Part of him was relieved. He needed time to contemplate and understand what had occurred under the effects of a possible sunburst. He had never hallucinated in his life. And he was certain that what he had experienced was a hallucination. Gaby had to be right. The wine had affected him. To confirm his suspicions he asked Dorothea if anything unusual had occurred during his absence.

“No,” she replied, puzzled at his question. “Are you okay?

“Nothing at all?” he persisted. He glanced at Theo.

His brother-in-law replied, “Nothing unexpected, other than Gabriella not feeling well and Allie driving her home.”

“Dorothea said, “She was feeling light-headed. I promised Gabriella I’d save her a piece of the cake. It should be coming out as soon as Allie returns.”

“I’m not feeling that well, either,” Anthony said. “Will Allie stay for the remainder of the party?”

“No,” Theo replied. “She intends to leave directly after blowing out the candles on the cake and the opening of the gifts. She is the guest of honor. She asked me to apologize to her guests afterwards, for her early departure, feeling she ought to stay overnight with her best friend, to be there for her, if needed.”

“Dear lovely Gabriella,” Anthony whispered. “She deserves no less than her sweet self would do for anyone in need.”

Dorothea eyed her brother oddly. She hadn’t missed the soulful tone and adulation in his voice. Was it possible?

“We can invite her along with Mom and Dad to our home for dinner on your birthday, next week,” she suggested.

“Yes, yes, we should do that,” he replied eagerly.

She glanced at her husband, arching her eyebrows, a quiet, intimate exchange of ideas.

Catching their sly smiles, Anthony added in his defense, “She is after all Allie’s best friend. I’ll visit sis tomorrow to ask about Gabriella.” It would give him a chance to speak with his sister about Francis. Why she was contemplating canceling her wedding.
