Sage Grady sucked in a breath and pointed, as if all the other women werenât already looking up. Of course they were, because they were getting a demonstration of how the roof retracted over this indoor hallâmaking it an outdoor paradise.
Trees and plants, bushes and flowers grew right out of the stones at their feet, as even when the roof was closed, the glass let in plenty of sunlight. The horticulturists and landscapers here at Island Aisle kept the tropics perfectly manicured here in their most popular wedding hall, and Sage thought Lauren would get a miracle if she could book this place in a matter of a few months.
Places like this got reserved a year out, with new dates opening up and getting snatched by those on a waiting list. The whole room smelled like flowers and tangerines and another faint scent that also reminded Sage of something delicious. A memory just out of reach that made her smile.
âThatâs incredible,â Cass said. âLook how it disappears completely.â She spoke as the last of the roof halves vanished over the sides and the ferns that had somehow been planted up above waved in the breeze as it wafted down toward them.
âYou have to book this place,â Joy said.
âThereâs no way theyâre going to have something in March,â Lauren said, and her voice carried a little bit of longing.
âYou never know,â Bea said, ever the optimist.
They werenât the only ones on the tour today, and a couple had come together, and then another bride and her aunt, and a mother-daughter team that reminded Sage of the time she and her daughter had spent before Tori had gotten married.
She smiled just thinking about her daughter, who lived in Santa Fe now with her husband Rod. They were due with their first baby by summertime, and Sage couldnât wait to take a road trip across the enormous state of Texas to see her and her first grandchild.
As the oldest in the group, Sage often felt like the other women were looking to her for some sort of wisdom or advice. She didnât speak up as often as Cass or Bea, and she did display more confidence than Bessie. Lauren and Joy had grown exceptionally close in the past couple of years, and Sage had maintained a level of friendship with all of them over the years of their Supper Club.
She had told Joy that she was going to leave Texas, find somewhere to rent here, and move to Hilton Head. With Bea, Cass, and Lauren already here, it did feel inevitable that theyâd all make the move.
Bessie and Wynona were looking at commercial properties for their bakery. Sage could easily move her salon to Hilton Head, as there were plenty of ladies here whoâd require her coloring skills and experience. She had a tiny house on a less tiny farm, but she didnât live there. She only did hair in the house, which barely had running water.
She did love her chickens, her pair of pigs, the cats and goats on her little four-acre hobby farm, but it was in Texas.
