Pair with: Quinta Ferreira Merlot. Richly coloured and bursting with intense aromas of vanilla, black cherry, cinnamon and cloves, this wine is complex and well balanced. Soft tannins frame flavours of black pepper, plums, blackberries and chocolate that linger through to the finish. It’s delicious on its own or with grilled meats.

5496 Black Sage Road, Oliver

Prepare to be utterly enchanted when you discover Le Vieux Pin Winery on Black Sage Road. The vineyards of this charming estate surround a petite Provençal-style winery building, picture-perfect with its gravel courtyard, little wrought-iron tables and chairs and aromatic lavender bushes scenting the air. Inside, a chalkboard listing les vins de la maison is featured beside the cozy tasting bar. The pièce de résistance is Severine (Sev) Pinte, a French winemaker and viticulturist and the face and spirit behind the winery operation. She has combined her knowledge of old-world French winemaking with new-world Okanagan style, and the result has been phenomenal.

Le Vieux Pin literally translates to “the old pine tree” and is a tribute to the majestic old pine tree on the winery estate. Le Vieux Pin has excelled in creating stellar Syrah and has a cult following for the purpose-grown Vaila rosé. It is one of the most finely crafted rosés in the province, and one of the first to be made in the traditional French style. “For me, rosé is one of the most challenging styles of wine to create,” Sev explains. Critics have called it “sunshine captured in a bottle.”

With a degree in agronomy from the esteemed Montpellier University and a master’s degree in viticulture and oenology, Sev is what the French call a vigneron. She spent many years honing her craft in France before coming here in 2010, and she uses sustainable and organic farming practices in the vineyards. She adheres to strong ethics and a philosophy that includes “keeping our farm healthy and devoid of chemicals for our children and our children’s children.”

Winery owners Saeedeh and Sean Salem emigrated from Iran and own two of Oliver’s most stylish small wineries: Le Vieux Pin and LaStella Winery. They are passionate food and wine lovers and found the perfect match in Sev to make their dream winery a reality. “When I first arrived to become the winemaker at Le Vieux Pin, it felt like it was meant to be,” Sev recalls.

The owners have an Italian-inspired villa for rent called the Lakehouse on Osoyoos Lake.
