“Well, hey,” Josie said, opening the door. “What brings you over today?” She looked more rested than before, but her eyes still looked tired.

“Cooking emergency,” I said. “Do you happen to have any pecans?”

She smiled. “Only about fifty pounds. Come on in.”

“Kate’s baking like she’s on one of those contest shows, and she’s elbows-deep in pie crust.”

Josie led me into the kitchen and said, “Are you sure I can’t make more than stuffing?”

“It’s under control,” I said, and told her about the guys and their whiteboard, and how they’d turned the living room into command central.

“Those boys get serious about their food,” she said.

“It’s a little intimidating. I can barely peel potatoes.”

She laughed. “Nuts are in the deep freeze. I’ll be right back.”

While she went to get the pecans, I went into the living room to say hi to Buck. I’d brought the little mojo bag from Duchess’ shop and fished it out of the pocket of my jeans.

Buck was stretched out in his recliner, watching TV.

“Hey, I said. “How are you feeling?”

“Well hey, kid,” he said, turning the volume down. “I’m a little achy still, but not bad. Josie’s still fussing over me, though, and won’t let me out of her sight.” He shifted in his chair, wincing as he did so. He reminded me of my father then, pretending that everything was fine, even when the pain was obvious.

“I brought you something,” I said.

“Is it pie?”

“That’s tomorrow,” I said. “Thanks to a few pounds of your pecans.”

“Oh, good,” he said. “I’d hate to think we shelled a thousand pounds for nothing.”

“Kate makes a killer chocolate bourbon pecan pie.”

He sighed, wistful. “I knew I liked that lady.”

“I saw this and thought of you.” I dropped the little blue mojo bag into his hand, and he examined it, his brow furrowed.

“What’s this for?”

“Good health,” I said. “A speedy recovery.”

He looked at me like I’d just placed a bullfrog in his hand. “I thought you didn’t believe in this stuff.”

“I think it’s good luck,” I said, kissing him on the cheek.

He sighed and placed it on the table next to his chair. “Then maybe it is,” he said. “I’ll take what I can get.”

“Here we go,” Josie said. She walked in cradling a plastic bag of shelled pecans. “Is this enough?”

“Oh sure,” I said. “You just saved Thanksgiving.”

She smiled, handing me the big. “Well, you just holler if you need anything else, hon.”

“I’m on strict orders to get back ASAP,” I said. “But y’all come by whenever you like tomorrow. We’ll eat around one.”

When I walked outside and onto the porch, I heard muffled voices coming from the backyard. Thinking it was Lucille, I walked around the side of the house to say hello. But as I approached, the other voice lowered and then there was Lucille’s voice, agitated. I kept to the grass, straining to hear what the argument was about, but could only catch a few words. Stepping back on the gravel driveway, I rounded the back corner and saw them just a few yards away.
