Le Chevalier Anne-Louis de Tousard would not have much time to reconsider his boast that “We are all Americans.” He left New Orleans in 1816 and died in Paris the following year. An eloquent defense of Tousard’s claim came in 1842. Bernard Marigny, as a witness and participant in events during the Battle of New Orleans, addressed the Louisiana Legislature on the French contribution saying, in part:

It is said that the French did not wish to fight. The French and the naturalized citizens of all nations covered themselves with glory. Lafitte and the Baratarians fought valiantly throughout the engagement. Free men of color from St. Domingue, though they had no property or family in Louisiana, fought tenaciously against the English…. All men who know how to make an analysis find it easy to arrive at the conclusion that with the exception of Generals Jackson, Carroll and Coffee, nearly all men most useful at that time were Creoles of Louisiana, naturalized Frenchmen or Creoles of the French Antilles.241
