CHAPTER FOURTEEN

OUTSIDE THE STADIUM

After ducking into an abandoned concession stand and losing the drone, Lucas, Marc and Real circled the rest of the concourse until finding a collapsed section of railing near the facility’s parking lot. Real refused to climb over the debris but allowed Marc to pick him up and carry him, slowing down their escape as Lucas kept watch on the drones above the Stadium and the helicopters approaching. Once they reached the parking lot, the trio scurried away, heading in the opposite direction of the choppers and Base. The darkness in the Stadium complex shrouded their escape, and though they stumbled and tripped on cracks and debris littering the lot, they soon found themselves at the same section of broken fence where Marc and Mansfield had entered.

Marc carried Real to the other side, not hesitating to leave behind Mansfield and Frat, even as gunshots and distant yelling and thwupping choppers filled the night sky behind them. Lucas wasn’t so certain, his eyes glancing back, more concerned with searching for his fellow Adventurer than scanning for danger. He stopped atop the broken fence and looked to the Stadium, wondering if he should go back for his friend, wondering if he shouldn’t have left him in the first place. But his breathing came in pained gasps and his vision remained blurry, not to mention that his head pounded and most of his body ached.

Frat made his decision… he knew the risks, Lucas told himself over and over, though he knew that was only an excuse… he knew he’d forever doubt himself if things didn’t work out for his fellow Adventurer.

“Let’s go before you’re spotted,” Marc hissed, snapping Lucas into action.

They hobbled away from the Stadium fence and took shelter behind a pile of debris several hundred feet away. Marc mentioned the possibility of heading north toward the Base – of looking for Heather and Colin to help complete their mission – but the married couple had the map, and the choppers flying from that direction shined spotlights on the ground, as if searching for them.

“We got them this far. If they didn’t figure out a way in – or figure out how to get what they needed – I don’t think there’s anything we could do,” Marc told Real, rubbing the dog’s head when he whined. “Now, we have to figure out how to survive.”

Lucas nodded, following as Marc headed south, trying to leave the Stadium and the GM and all aircraft behind them. Marc spoke about the city several miles ahead, about how they’d have to be on the lookout for people stationed at the edges of the highway.

“I would suggest we find a way to circle the city, but between the cold and your injuries and everything we’ve been through, it might be smarter to sneak into the city and find a place to lay low for a few days,” Marc said.

Lucas cringed at the thought of heading into danger but couldn’t deny how his body ached for the chance to rest.
