In the event, Leonardo’s plan would be rejected, as would that of Bramante (who fifteen years later would go on to design the basilica of St. Peter’s in Rome). But Leonardo’s idea of harmony and interlocking balance between the separate elements would continue to be central to his notion of architecture and engineering. Just as the interlocking cogs transferred and magnified force from one part to another, driving his machines, so the opposing forces of the interlocking masonry held together and indeed strengthened the structure as a whole, giving it the apparent ability to defy gravity over a considerable span. This notion would spectacularly manifest itself in Leonardo’s design for the Pera bridge across the Golden Horn.
