CHAPTER 17

PORT JEFFERSON STATION, LONG ISLAND

Michael’s hands flew over the keyboard. He had little calloused pads on the ends of his fingers, the telltale sign of the veteran hacker. Two hours ago he had fired away at Brookhaven National Lab’s network system with two of his programs. EXPLORER had gotten him inside within 20 minutes and STANDGARD hovered in the background, ready to take action in the event his intrusion was discovered. Any would-be tracker was routed through the Mexico City phone exchange, and found themselves seconds later, thrust deeper into South America, lost in the primitive systems of Telefonica Del Peru.

He had already gone through Biology, Nuclear Medicine, Physics and Astronomy Departments with no indications of any involvement, and their departments were downright boring. Michael pulled back and geared himself to penetrate the main prize: Combined Sciences.

He had broken into that system a few months back and had been disappointed. Their network seemed to be administrative and security, nothing of real interest except the chatter regarding the inner system. From what he had picked up, Michael knew the research went on in the inner system. That’s where the juicy secrets were kept. Unfortunately, the inner system didn’t appear to be connected to any external link like phones, microwaves or optic fibers. All administrative issues seemed to be handled via paper, creating the ultimate firewall.

He modified his SEARCHFIND program with a few strokes and sent it ahead into the Combined Sciences network. This time letters appeared in the corner window of his screen:

SEARCHFIND RESULTS: 1 IR LINK.
