Work Smart

Petra and Michelle are colleagues in supply chain management at an aerospace company. Petra had just returned from lunch when she overheard Michelle on the phone. “Yes, OK. I’ll take care of it,” Michelle said before hanging up. Then she murmured aloud, “That’s not my job!”

With an imploring look, she glanced over at Petra and said, “I’m already overloaded with my own work. I don’t have time to help them do their job too! Petra, I don’t know how you do it.”

Petra is a total go-to person. She gets more work done, better and faster, than anybody else in their purchasing group. In addition, she somehow finds time to train and mentor less experienced colleagues.

Petra responded with a little smile, “Well, maybe that could be part of your job.”

Said Michelle, “What?! I don’t think I can work any harder than I am already.”

Petra looked at her colleague thoughtfully. “That’s just it, Michelle,” she said. “It’s not just about working hard. You have to work smart.”
