The Importance of Visualizing. What is visualizing? Visualizing is observing the various tones in a scene and imagining how you want these tones to reproduce in the final print. Visualizing also refers to composing or setting up the elements within the viewfinder of the camera for the purpose of producing an artistically pleasing image. However, when working with the Zone System, the photographer is particularly interested in the tonal values of the scene.

Visualizing, then, means looking at a field of snow (as in example #4) and knowing that it should reproduce as pure white (Zone 10), or looking at a black cat (as in example #5) and knowing that it should reproduce as Zone 1 black. In a portrait, the skin tone is usually the most important factor. Therefore, when editing and evaluating portraits of people, pay particular attention to skin tones and not peripheral objects within the photographic frame.
