Chapter 9

“SHANNON,” Jack called from across her bedroom.

She halted her furious pacing and whipped her head around. “What?”

“Just stop for a moment and come here.”

She hesitated as she peered at him before doing as she was told, and he placed his palms on either side of her face.

“You need to relax,” he said in a soothing voice. “This is not a big deal. It’s going to be fine. Okay?”

She shook her head as she lifted her gaze to the ceiling. “How are you always so calm about everything?”

“I’m not.” He shrugged. “But this isn’t going to be anywhere near as weird as you’re convincing yourself it is. What are you so worried is going to happen?”

She lifted her palms. “I don’t know. But how am I supposed to explain the fact that after years of never having a date for things like this, I finally show up with one that they’ve all been seeing in the movies for the past ten years?”

“They’re your friends,” he said. “You don’t have to explain anything.”

She stuck out her bottom lip in a pout. “Let’s just stay in tonight.”

“No,” he replied and then paused to kiss her. “You don’t skip your best friend’s birthday just because you’re ashamed of your date.”

She punched his shoulder playfully. “Shut up. You know that’s not how it is. I’m just going to catch hell for this.”

“Well, there are worse things.”

She sighed as she lifted up on her toes to wrap her arms around his neck. “I know. I’m sorry I’m making a big deal out of this. But are you sure you’re even up to going? You look exhausted. I think you’re worn out.”

His fingers trailed down the bare skin of her back as he nestled his cheek into her hair. “I’m fine. Nothing a little coffee can’t fix.”

“If you say so.” She sighed again. “I have no idea what to wear.”

He pulled his face out of her hair and smiled at her sweetly then kissed her neck and crossed the room to disappear into her closet. A moment later he reemerged with an emerald green top, a pair of dark denim skinny jeans, and some strappy heels.

She grinned at him. She’d known him only a month and he’d already managed to become the ultimate solver of all her petty problems.

Things were going better than she’d anticipated with their little undefined, long-distance arrangement. They had yet to make an official declaration of a relationship, but she wasn’t seeing anyone else and he’d stopped seeking out companions during his travels, so it all felt sort of…unofficially official. She didn’t need him to call himself her boyfriend, and she didn’t need to call herself his girlfriend, even though it seemed that was what was going on. He never addressed the issue of their title either, and Shannon figured it was because this would likely not last very long in the grand scheme of either of their lives. And that was fine with her.

Because, for right now, Jack was fulfilling all of her needs in the love-life department, and he was doing so in a monogamous fashion.
