Chapter Twelve

Shem sat on his bed, thinking about the night before.

He knew he was lucky he hadn’t called out Alissa’s name in the throes of passion – after all, he hadn’t been thinking about Sophia. How had this happened? And where had Alissa been? He was worried for her but at the same time, too embarrassed to call her. Plus, she’d know Sophia had left, and she might suspect Shem’s feelings, and that was too much to think about right now.

He walked over to his screen and called Ham. He needed to see a friendly face and Ham’s was his favourite. After a few minutes the screen clicked and Ham’s round happy face appeared before him. ‘Shem! You won’t believe where I am!’

Shem played along.

‘I don’t know … the garage?’

‘Nope! Try again.’ Ham’s smile grew wider, and Shem’s followed suit. He loved Ham’s enthusiasm for life.

‘Saime’s Bar?’

‘Haha, wrong again!’

Shem started to laugh. ‘Okay, I give up Ham. Where are you?’

‘Look out your window!’

Shem looked over to the window then back at the screen. Ham was nodding furiously, so Shem walked over and looked out over the dusty streets. His room was on the edge of the complex, so he really got one of the best views of the old city.

As his eyes scanned the view, he noticed something glinting in one of the old towers. It was a light flashing, maybe a torch of some kind. Someone was apparently in there.

‘Ham? Is that you over there?’

‘Yeah!’ Ham almost screamed in delight. ‘How the hell did you get in there?’

‘I’ll show you. Meet me in the canteen in ten minutes.’

‘How are you going to get to the canteen that quickly?’

‘Just trust me will you!’ With that, there was a click, and Shem stood staring at a blank screen.
