Chapter 11

Two priests pulled the beautiful white marble plate aside, that rested next to an ancient fountain in the Vatican gardens. The cardinal had been joined by Fabio. The priest who had served as his secretary.

“Fabio will lead you to the airfield. The pilots are trustworthy servants of our Lord,” the cardinal explained, and Elliot pulled his jacket on again.

“Thank you, Cardinal,” Elliot said. “I’ve never been big on communication with your big boss up there, but if there ever was a time, I could use some support, it’s now. Pray for me.”

“I’ll clear my schedule to do exactly that. Good luck, Professor.”

Elliot did something he had never done before; he extended his hand to him. The cardinal’s hawkish face sent him a smile and then shook it.

Elliot turned to Fabio, who looked as unhappy as he had when they first met. He handed Elliot his phone and wallet though. Both were of limited use. He would have to assume the phone was tracked by now and he was certain the credit cards—his and those Lindfors had supplied—would no longer work. He took both and pushed them into his pockets.

Then Fabio turned and descended into the black hole in the garden. Elliot followed. Once they were down, Fabio had already lit two torches. Old fashioned ones, with actual fire used for lighting. He handed one to Elliot.

“Perfect.” The secret passage was roughly chiseled into the stone. Fabio led the way with swift steps over the uneven ground. Clearly, he wasn’t using this path for the first time.

Elliot tried to keep up as they made their way into the darkness. The passageway was narrow, forcing Elliot and Fabio to walk in single file. The walls, worn with time, seemed to whisper secrets of the past. The occasional gust of wind hissed through unseen cracks, adding an eerie soundtrack to their journey. It took them almost half an hour, before they reached the end. Elliot could smell that the passageway had ended in the sewers. The odor almost made breathing impossible, as every single breath filled him with a feeling of nausea. Fabio stepped onto a rusty old metal grid platform and began to climb a ladder to the surface. Elliot followed as quickly as he could, eager to escape the stinking sewers.

At the top, a manhole cover blocked the way, but with surprising strength the small man pushed it aside and climbed out, offering Elliot his hand. He took it gratefully and half climbed, half let Fabio pull him out.

Fabio turned to the street, which was one of the old cobblestone streets in one of the oldest parts of the majestic Italian capital. A black SUV expected them, and Fabio took a remote key out and the lights of the car blinked as it was unlocked.

“Can I borrow your phone?” Elliot asked.

“I gave you back yours?” Fabio asked in surprise.

“I’m pretty sure I have half the intelligence services of the world listening to that one.” Elliot took it out, tossing it into the hole in the sewer.
