Chapter 14

Hannah stood at the metal fence of the US embassy in Reykjavik—and was shocked by how little was left of it.

Once an emblem of diplomatic presence, the embassy now lay in ruins. The fire had consumed everything in its path, leaving behind a desolate scene of devastation. The exterior walls, once adorned with the symbol of American authority, stood partially collapsed, revealing a labyrinth of charred debris within.

The windows, some shattered and some absent, showcased the emptiness and sorrow that now permeated the abandoned structure. The roof had caved in, exposing a twisted framework of metal beams and scorched remnants of what were once office spaces and meeting rooms.

Fire workers still walked through the remains, as if there was anything worth looking for. Hannah raised her phone and took a picture of what she saw. Then she sent it to Monroe.

No survivors. Seventy-five people had died and it was only a footnote in international papers, as the ravaging chaos in China kept on dominating the news. Hannah turned away from the chaotic view and made her way down the street. She had her scarf over her mouth, to filter some of the ash out, but still found breathing difficult outside. Many people who passed her were wearing breathing masks. Hannah looked around and saw only a handful of people were walking in her direction. She tried to memorize them. An elderly lady with plastic bags. A young man in a gray coat with a breathing mask on his face, and a young couple who had made the mistake of wearing white jackets, now smeared and covered with the ash as it settled and created a black film over everything.

She took the next corner and started looking for a taxi, but with no luck. The streets around the embassy were still blocked by rescue vehicles and police cars.

Nearby, she had seen a street with shops, and she made her way there, hoping that shopping areas came with transportation. She messaged Elliot on the way, asking where they would meet.

As she took another corner, she looked over her shoulder again at the people behind her. A man in his fifties, two teenaged girls and a man in a gray coat with a mask on.

Hannah slowed her steps and turned again. It was the same man as before. He had stood at the embassy with a few other spectators and had started leaving around the time as she did. Now he was still there, even after she had walked a considerable distance away?

Hannah started walking again, her steps accelerating. Was she being followed? Had they expected her?

Her hand closed around the handgun in the pocket of her jacket, as she took a sharp left turn and began to run. It took only a second until she heard steps behind her—Equally running. She had head start, but the man was quickly catching up.

The streets here were mostly empty, and she cursed herself for not staying in the public areas. Left and right, she passed the colorful houses for which the city was famous for.
