Interlude

The slow lumbering animals munched on the shrubs. They had long ago moved away from the noise and bright flashes, and finally found contentment. But a shroud of some sort had covered one of the most prolific and delicious shrubs the herd had seen in some time; it frustrated the herd’s efforts to eat the shrub’s tender green shoots. They tried to brush it off with their heads and feet, but it just wouldn’t come off.

A sudden noise startled the herd. A beep sounded from within the shrub; then a high-pitched squeal, and then silence.

A curious youngster poked his head under the shrub and saw what looked like a huge seedpod. It had split open and disgorged its seed. But this seed was strange, and had something the youngster had never seen before. A straight line. Several straight lines. Yellow scratching on the side of the seed had the same color as the tasty yellow flower found growing from the cliffs two days march away.

If the creature could read, the yellow scratches would spell TAC-AM-0673 Model B. But it merely sniffed the strange seed, smelled something vaguely unpleasant, and walked back to his mama.
