Groucho seriously has his doubts about the piece as a Marxian vehicle, but thinks it is worth the gamble for the reward it will bring if happily received. “We make only one picture a year, to keep the public from catching on to us,” he explains (…) “Room Service will be something new for us, and we hope will serve to defer the evil day when the public does catch on.” In preparation, Groucho has already begun growing his real mustache. His usual grease-paint lip-ornament he deems out of place for the character he is to play: “In a real play we can’t appear as caricatures or cartoons.”
