Late afternoon…

Clyde’s house…

Harumi’s room…

* * *

Harumi replied to her big sister Liru’s text message, before returning her attention to Ruri and Matsume. Other than Liru, they were the closest thing to extended family she had. She loved Alice and the others too, but Ruri and Matsume seemed to have an unseen connection with her. They were more vocal about the things they loved, while Harumi was a bit more reserved. Maybe the sneaky fox saying wasn’t too far off and it applied to kitsune as well.

“I still feel uneasy about this,” Ruri said. “I don’t want you or the baby to get hurt… Are you sure you’ll really be okay in this fight, Soul Sister?”

“Ruri’s got a point,” Matsume said.

“I’ll be fine,” Harumi said. “I think I’ve got at least one more month before it’s time to wind down a bit. Besides, I don’t have a baby belly or anything.”

“You’ll soon have a good bump, that’s how our bodies work,” Matsume said. “But because of our bodies, you should always be cautious, especially from week four and beyond.”

Misaka finally arrived after being invited by Ruri twenty minutes ago. The Phoenix girl had errands to run with her parents but promised to show up as soon as possible.

“Hi Misaka,” Harumi greeted.

“Well met, Misaka,” Ruri greeted.

“You’re looking quite exhausted there,” Matsume said to the Phoenix.

“Because of my dad. He’s a bit… overprotective,” Misaka said.

“But aren’t you like nineteen or twenty?” Matsume said.

“Maybe staying there while attending college wasn’t the best idea,” Misaka said, “but dorms make me feel uncomfortable.”

“I heard Sato Academy’s dorms are the best,” Harumi said, then she added, “When you can afford them.”

Both of them had a giggle. Harumi’s scholarship didn’t cover the dorms and some of the course costs, so she opted to get an apartment.

The young woman didn’t expect Clyde to invite her to live with him… but that kindness. She wanted to hold onto it. Ironically, the young man said that to her.

Harumi didn’t think of herself as kind, but just herself. Hurting others just wasn’t in her blood. This, of course, was the same for her big sister.

Misaka took a seat in the last remaining pink plush chair. Harumi would have to thank Alice again later for buying her these.

“I guess we’ll get to the point,” Matsume said. “Do you believe we will still have to face the Thousand Year Dragon?”

Misaka flinched. Harumi also felt the twinge of unease. She finally allowed herself to acknowledge that the Thousand Year Dragon was nearby, waiting, and watching. For some reason, the dragon decided to watch the approaching fight.

“I… don’t know,” Misaka said, “but she’s here.”

“You mean she’s been here, for at least a couple of days now,” Ruri said. “My nose doesn’t lie.”

“Chiyo knows too, but has opted to just watch,” Harumi said. “She threatened to go berserk if Emyo dared hurt Clyde.”

The women let out a chuckle, each with a drop of sweat dripping off the back of their heads.

“How did someone like that, who can have any powerful man or dragon she wants, choose Clyde?” Matsume asked.
