Chapter 38

Patel looked at Watanabe incredulously. “That’s your solution to not killing them? Another Jonathan?”

“I’m clutching at straws here.” Watanabe shrugged, lifting his hands in admission. “I have limited knowledge of the non-science of a frequency shift. If we can replicate him, we might be able to interfere with the connection between the past and the present. We just need that particular vibrational frequency. Creating another Jonathan would replicate that completely. But I really don’t know. His skeletal timbre? His skull resonance? His overall vibration?”

Patel crossed his arms. “We have his vibrational signature on the network with multiple location records. It’s easily recreatable, and the Florans could have done that ages ago. I’m guessing it’s his recently gold-pill-upgraded skull. But you need to be able to tap into the conduit. It would be like plugging a tiny pipe into a sewage drain. You’d just syphon off a little.”

Watanabe shook his head. “No. Not if we make the conduit wider. If we can cause it to change direction, move it to a different location. I’m guessing the Florans must be using some kind of broadcasting system. Shifting the beam would mean it would no longer be broadcast from the homeworld. We could attach the Jonathan copy’s skull to the signal beam somehow, then flash him to a location outside the galaxy.”

Patel pointed to his screen where a new graph was displaying a curved line with a slight dip in it. “There is an imperceptible change to the frequency shift modulation in this room when it is in direct line with the Floran homeworld. There must be something here that is causing the fluctuation on a quantum level.” Patel stroked his toothbrush mustache. “I think we’re looking at this too three-dimensionally.”

“Probably. Go on.”

“Jonathan’s vibration has been in this room in the past, and if we rescue him, it might be here in the future. I think it is the recent past and future Jonathans that are creating the fluctuations.”

Watanabe’s mouth was agape. “What are you suggesting? Instead of a copy, we jump to another timeline and grab an alternate Jonathan? It might not match the quantum frequency.”

“No, of course not. But look at the graph. His presence is almost imperceptible. The conduit is going to have to be much bigger.”

“So, we can make a copy-Jonathan based on his most recent cell record here, and I can work on boosting the signal.”

“My dear Hiro. If your theory is correct, and we might only be able to reduce the beam a little using another Jonathan, then I don’t want just one. I want hundreds!”

Watanabe sat back in his chair, looking at Patel incredulously. Then, he sighed. “As absurd as that sounds, we should start as soon as possible. Perhaps a better solution will come up in the meantime. We best get to the main laboratory.”

They headed for the corridor, and were surprised to see crowds of fast moving aliens.

“The second phase of the shift has begun,” said Patel. Aliens ran past them both ways
