Chapter Ten
Tales from the Fuhrerbunker
"I really don't understand why we have to wear these ridiculous blindfolds over our eyes," Farika mildly protested in a tone of bewilderment, as she waited with Mara Marhoe and Valerian outside the entrance to Brenda Rhinestone's underground bunker.
"I think it's kind of exciting," Mara Marhoe was heard to say. "I feel like a contestant on a TV game show."
"The kind of game show where you win a one-way trip to Hell," Farika muttered to herself, underneath her breath.
Valerian, sensing Farika's anxiety, told her not to worry and assured her that the blindfolding of all guests before arriving at the bunker, as well as after leaving it, was standard protocol because the bunker was classified as a âTop Secretâ location.
Farika then heard the sliding of a bolt, immediately followed by the squeaking of rusted hinges, and then, what sounded to be a steel hatch door being thrown open. She was promptly escorted down a narrow flight of metal stairs that echoed with each step. It reminded her of the fire escape outside the window of Doctor I's office in the Midtown Psychiatric Hospital, not only because they both produced a similar sound, but also at the bottom of each awaited a world of uncertainty.
Halfway down the stairs, Farika was overcome with a great unease, and began to wonder what new web of madness she had unwittingly allowed herself to get tangled up in this time. It would not be long before she found out.
After reaching the bottom, Farika heard the sound of another metal door opening. All at once, her ears were assaulted by a blast of marching band music, the wild barking of dogs, and a deep female voice that said, "Willkommen in meinem Zuhause."
Farika suddenly felt hands at the back of her head undoing the blindfold. The sensation startled her at first, and then filled her with a sense of relief since it meant that her vision would no longer be obscured. The blindfold was yanked away, taking the darkness with it, and a glaring light invaded her eyes, causing her to squint.
As her eyes adjusted to the brightness that surrounded her, they became focused upon the extraordinary sight of a young woman sitting in a motorized wheelchair and dressed in a men's brown, World War II Nazi uniform complete with black leather jack boots and a red armband which bore the insignia of a swastika. She wore a cervical collar around her neck, and her blonde hair had been cropped into a short, almost crew cut, hairstyle. Her dark brown eyebrows were tweezed pencil thin, which gave her somewhat of a surreal appearance, and in the area between her upper lip and nose she sported a black toothbrush mustache that was held on with some sort of adhesive. Had it not been for her false eyelashes, black eyeliner and blood red lipstick, she could have easily been mistaken for a man.
Immediately, Farika fearfully backed away as two large, spike-collared German shepherd dogs began charging towards her, growling and snarling in a most unfriendly manner.
