Chapter Twenty-Five
March 15, 2081
Vanessa stood on the front porch of Diana's tidy bungalow. The cold bowl of potato salad tucked in one arm, Charlotte and Isabel in tow. The weather was unseasonably warm for almost St. Patrick's Day, even for Dallas, with temperatures in the low eighties. The twins were dressed for both the weather and the occasion, in shorts and green tank tops. Vanessa wore her She-Hulk vintage t-shirt and black "fat lady" yoga pants. Despite the fact Vanessa was barely pregnant, she was starting to expand, and the pants in her current wardrobe that could accommodate her rapidly expanding waistline were small in number.
A visit to her obstetrician the day before for an in-depth scan confirmed her pregnancy and revealed a shocking new detail: she was once again carrying twins. After she revealed her pregnancy to her family, she intended to grill her mother on whether any of the women in their family was capable of having single births. A blood test revealed a surprising development though, and that was that she was having boy-girl twins this time around. Somehow, this detail was the thing that made the situation seem real.
She still hadn't heard from Bubba since the night of the wedding more than a month ago. She had made all the discreet inquiries she thought she could, and once she shared her news with her family, she planned to take more active measures to track him down. Since he'd left her bed to go into the arms of another woman, she wasn't sure what she could expect once she'd made contact with him and told him her news.
Isabel reached out to ring the doorbell, but the door swung open before her finger could hit the button. Vanessa's mouth grew dry. Standing in front of her, as if thinking of him caused him to be conjured from thin air, stood Bubba. She couldn't stop her eyes from devouring him, all tall and fine. His face registered surprise, then pleasure, his lips twisting into a wry smile. He wore his customary black t-shirt, which emphasized his broad chest and molded to his muscular shoulders and biceps, snug blue jeans with the wolf's head belt buckle he always wore. Western boots completed the ensemble.
His hair had grown some since the last time she'd seen him. The dirty blond locks were now long enough to flop into his eyes, and her mind cast back to how she had twined her fingers in that hair, pulling his face into her womanhood, holding her breath, waiting for the impact of his lips on her bodyâ¦
"Uncle Bubba!" the girls warbled in unison before barreling into him, making him take a step backwards.
Bubba's blond eyebrows went up in pleased surprise.
"Girls!" He grinned from ear to ear, happy to see them.
"Whatâwhat are you doing here?" Vanessa asked, confused to see him at her sister's place. Had he been over since the wedding, and had her sister just not told her?
"Visiting my best friend," he said. His face held the same open expression she was used to seeing on him.
