I concentrated, but I didn’t get any more information. Dexter was still sitting in front of me, panting, but now with a big doggy grin. There was so much drool dripping from his mouth that a puddle formed in front of his paws.

Aside from the scary look and what he had done to the rabbit, I couldn’t see anything threatening. While I was thinking about how best to handle the situation, Dexter got up and came at me. He rammed my leg with his head, sending me on my butt. Startled, I jerked my fists up, but Dexter kept wagging his tail. This time, he nudged me more gently with his hot muzzle. Did he want to be petted? Slowly, I reached out and stroked the gigantic head. A contented growl sounded, and he sat down again. His fur was surprisingly soft and his skin underneath felt almost hot.

After a minute, I stopped, but he nudged me again. Sighing, I continued. Every time I stopped, this game repeated like a normal dog. I wanted to try something, so I stopped petting and ignored the nudging. Dexter grumbled softly.

“No,” I said sternly. He put on a loyal puppy dog look, which seemed hilarious considering his appearance. A noise in the barn caught his attention. All at once, he jumped up and ran off at lightning speed.

Sarah and Godmode popped into my head, so I rushed after him, shouting loudly. Dexter ignored me and stormed towards the entrance. I shouted a loud warning call when I saw the rabbit that was about to hobble into the ruin. It noticed the approaching hellhound and turned.

The fight between the two monsters did not last long. Despite its size, the rabbit had no chance. This time, Dexter ate the bloody remains as I quickly looked away. When he was done, he nudged my hand with his snout and looked at me questioningly.

“So, what do I do with you?” He tilted his head and wagged his tail. Sure, stroking always worked. I scratched him thoughtfully behind the ears and he purred contentedly.

After five minutes, I was getting tired. I wanted to go back to the sleeping bag, but every time I went towards the camp, Dexter blocked my way.

“What do you want? I can’t pet you all night.” With his mouth, he gently grabbed my hand and slowly pulled me out into the yard.

“It’s okay, I’ll go with you,” I said, and he let go of me. In the ruins of the inn, Dexter stopped. All that remained of the building were the foundation walls and remnants of the chimney. Rotten wooden boards and rusted objects laid around. There were large holes in the floor, as if someone had been looking for something. The tracks told me it must have been Dexter. The hellhound looked for a free spot and dug a hole in no time. Whimpering, he eyed the hole before starting to dig again at another spot.

“I’m supposed to help you, but what are we looking for?” Unfortunately, I didn’t get an answer, yet I helped.
